What will you do when the Sun goes out? That’s the question two fiftysomethings, living out the bitter endgame of their wasted lives, must answer. It’s the end of the world, not just as they know it, but for real. Paul and Scott have been the best of friends since childhood, ever since they checked the same book out of their elementary school library, but they’ve come to loath one another, as life’s catastrophes slowly beat them down. Now, a real catastrophe will kill them, and everyone else in the world, unless they find a way to survive. The answer they come up with is utterly heroic. And it will make or break them as men.

This is easily one of the best William Barton's best books. It is really, really good. It's also not what I expected. It's an end-of-the-world survival story. There were a lot of things that I liked about this story. It's a gripping read, a real page-turner. The science fiction part of it is great. Also, it is very funny. I know it may seem odd to say that about a story about the end of the world, but it has a lot of dark humor that had me laughing out loud in parts.
It was a real delight reading this book and seeing references to other books by Barton that I've also read, including some that he didn't write until after this one was finished. That was quite cool.
It's a truly excellent read! Definitely ranks up there with "Acts of Conscience", which is still my favorite.
Without spoiling anything, this book has a really bittersweet ending. It's a lot more hopeful than I thought it would be, but a tough pill to swallow also. An afterward has some interesting notes about how this book was published in serial form.
Highly recommended!

Moments of Inertia edition by William Barton Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I made about 4 pages. By then there were numerous F-bombs, and the "C" word was the final straw as far as I was concerned. I do not enjoy expletives and do not see how the gratuitous use of them adds to the story.
I've been a fan of William Barton ever since reading his "Acts of Conscience" -- one of those rare life-changing novels that leaves you with a different perspective on the world (Peter Watts' "Blindsight" is a more recent example; it left me questioning my own consciousness). He describes "Moments of Inertia" as his best novel yet. I wouldn't go that far (that remains "Acts of Conscience"), but it's pretty good -- it's probably among his top 3 or 4 novels. You can read the plot summary elsewhere, but essentially it follows our protagonist as he learns of and copes with the extinction of the Sun, with subsequent freezing of the earth and atmosphere. If you've read Barton before, then you won't be surprised at the misogynistic behavior of the protagonist, nor his (very human) obsession with sex; this can be a bit off-putting, but certainly brings the character to life. A couple of flaws in the science -- both the Sun and Venus have far too much thermal inertia to exhibit a noticeable change in temperature over the story's time scale, so in practice the Sun wouldn't visibly "go-out" in our lifetimes even if the fusion stopped, and nor would Venus turn into an ice ball in the same time frame (years ago I read a discussion of the difficulties of teraforming Venus that said that even if you removed the atmosphere and blocked the sun it would take at least tens of thousands of years for the surface to cool to "room temperature"). Anyway, it's a good read, and if you're already a Barton fan you'll want to add it to your collection.
