The number of times the characters dropped the "F bomb" did not add to the story at all.In fact it almost caused me to not finish the book at all. However the story line held my interest enough that I pushed thru to the end. (The only reason for the second star) Probably won't seek out this author again.

Candles and Roses DI Alec McKay Book 1 eBook Alex Walters Reviews
Found it hard to work out the characters, and was somewhat confused for awhile as to who was who and whether they were male or female. Once I had it sorted the story really gripped me.
Alec Mckay is the quintessential copper, steeped in troubled waters, and trudging through the darker parts of humanity. Character development and plotting are perfect throughout the story.
The story was decent, but the narrator had such a thick accent and gruff voice that it was difficult to follow. Also he kept repeating sentences and apologizing for it. Audio version badly needs editing.
I was introduced to Scottish crime story authors a few years ago by a friend in Glasgow. It'd been a while since reading one and so when I saw this I thought I'd give it a go. The vernacular was like coming home again and I enjoyed the lead character, who was not as messed up as I expected but carried a very human grief that he used to temper his feelings about his ongoing case. I found the story to be realistic and in my world everyone drops an F-bomb when the need arises So I hope that doesn't throw anyone off reading a very good story, which this is.
In the begining, it has you thinking that these murders are happening too fast and too close together. Then the author catches you in a mind grip.
DI Alex Mckay has more to worry about then just his career. It seems that he is projecting his emotions from his personal life onto this current case.
When Lizzie Hamilton became a misper there was no doubt in DI Mckay's mind that she became a victim of something sinister. One year later the demise of three women that have similar backgrounds as Lizzie Hamilton have been discovered in compromising and disturbing ways. Their deaths strike up a flurry of investigation and bring them to the most likely suspects.
With the case coming to a close, so.many irregularities come to the surface. There's no doubt that there is more to this story then meets the eye. Maybe the answers will come to light in the next book of the series and we can be at peace knowing that the Black Isle Killer is brought to justice once and for all.
While serial killers are not my usual thing, I do like police procedurals and this is a good one. DI McKay makes the book for me. I found him to be an interesting and likable character. I am so tired of books where the police are bumblers or cross ethical lines.
There was only one thing that kept this from a 5 star and that was what I thought was the rather rough introduction of a particular character. I'd like to say more but haven't been able to come up with a way to do it spoiler free.
In conclusion, I hope there are many more DI McKay books to come. The ending is set up nicely for the next book.
This is a new series that introduces the reader to DI Alex McKay. And the opening chapter is one you won't want to miss.
McKay has some issues ... he lost his own daughter and his relationship with his wife is deteriorating at a rapid pace. He hasn't been able to stop thinking about a missing young woman ..one who reminds him so much of his daughter.
It's not long before McKay and his team have their hands full .... the body of a young woman is found. She's surrounded by candles and roses.
And almost before they identify this victim, another body is found ... surrounded by candles and roses. And then there's a third body ....
To catch this killer, he needs to find the thread that ties all these victims together. He must delve into the lives of these women and sort out the lies and secrets.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. McKay is a multi-layered character. Despite the loss of his child and the ongoing problems of a crumbling marriage, he doesn't let either interfere with his search for a vicious killer. He's got a great team to wok with and there is mutual respect among them all.
This was a riveting crime thriller and I look forward to seeing more from this author.
